Fifth studio album from the group, their first of two releases in 1970. The album title comes from the warehouse in Berkeley where the band rehearsed, dubbed “the factory” by band member Doug “Cosmo” Clifford due to the intensity & frequency of the rehearsals. The photo was taken by Bob Fogerty, brother to John & Tom. The written sign on the post reads “3rd Generation”, a reference to what a critic wrote about the band, included in the liner notes of their debut album, about being part of the third generation of bands from San Francisco. The album hit number one in the UK, Australia, The US & Canada, & six of the eleven tracks were released as singles, with all six charting in the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was number one on the Billboard 200 chart for nine consecutive weeks. Certified gold in the UK & 4x platinum in the US.
